Looking for two new Lead Readers
Open Book is looking for two new Lead Readers to support its creative writing programme with community groups for women in Glasgow at two locations: Maryhill Integration Network and Social Bite. Because the sessions happen in person in Glasgow (and in line with our environmental policy), applicants living in that area are preferred.
About Open Book
Since March 2013 Open Book (openbookreading.com) has run shared reading and creative writing sessions for adults. In our 2023/24 year, we’ll have delivered well over 1200 sessions in around 80 locations – from Shetland to Stranraer, and in places like Aberdeen, Inverness, Dundee and in the Central Belt. We work in a number of sectors – libraries, health care settings, with the elderly, refugees and migrants, community groups, and in prisons, libraries and other public settings. Stories and poems are read aloud then discussed in a relaxed, informal setting, with about one-third of the groups adding creative writing.
Shared Reading+Creative Writing
Open Book is looking for two Creative Writing Lead Readers to deliver the following:
- 4 shared reading+creative writing sessions at Maryhill Integration Network in Glasgow between 1 October 2024 – 31 March 2025
- 5 shared reading+creative writing sessions at Social Bite in Glasgow between 1 October 2024 – 31 March 2025
Our hope is that both these opportunities will be extended beyond March 2025 subject to funding. Both Lead Readers will be joining a strong community of approximately 75 Open Book Lead Readers.
Applicant Requirements
The successful applicants will:
- be a published author with a publication record commensurate with authors on Scottish Book Trust’s Author Database;
- have previous experience of workshop delivery;
- be asked to join the PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme) and to provide two references (Open Book will meet the costs of PVG membership and process the application on behalf of the Lead Reader); and
- be available to attend one paid training session in September and to deliver workshops from October onwards.
Role
The successful candidates will be contracted to deliver shared reading+creative writing workshops in the Open Book model across a 6 month period. The fee in respect of each workshop (including preparation, any travel costs, delivery, and post session feedback) is £200. Training hours will be funded at £30 per hour.
